Newly released figures show Atlantic City’s casinos had to endure another decline in revenues in May, showing an across the board slide of 9 percent to $290.6 million when compared with those of May 2010.

Associated Press reports that the biggest loser was Trump Plaza Hotel Casino, down 25 percent, from $17.3 million last May to $13 million this May.

Across all casinos, slot machine win fell 8.7 percent, to $206 million, while table game win decreased by 10.1 percent, to $84.6 million.

For the first five months of the year, the Atlantic City casinos won $1.4 billion, down 7.6 percent from the same period in 2010.

The New Jersey gambling Mecca is struggling in the midst of a four-and-a-half year revenue slump brought on by competition from casinos in neighbouring states and the sluggish US economy.

With 17 World Series of Poker events either completed or in progress by Friday, it appears that Black Friday has not had the dampening effect that many feared it would. Player turnouts have in general been good, with several events recording bigger entry fields than last year.

Without the actions against online sites Full Tilt, Pokerstars and Absolute there would almost certainly have been bigger numbers still, but in general the organisers appears satisfied with the way in which this 42nd WSOP is developing.

In event 13: $1,500 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em Shootout, the sixteen survivors from an original entry field of 1 440 returned to the felt on Friday to find out who would take the bracelet and the $369 371 main prize for this event.

Among those taking their seats for the last day of the tournament were Dan Kelly, Erik Cajelais, Frank Kassela, David Pham, Lars Bonding, and Vitaly Lunkin.

The format was two eight handed tables, scheduled to combine into a single once the eleventh elimination took place. All players started with 450,000 in chips and with a re-started structure unique to the day.

Daniel Fischer was the first to head for the rail, eliminated in 16th Place ($13,238) by Joe Webber.

Approaching midnight Friday Vegas time Daniel Makowsky had just been eliminated in third place for $151,379 by Andrew Badecker, clearing the path for a heads up between Badecker and Robbie Verspui, with the former holding a 4 to 1 chip lead.

Event 14, the $3,000 buy-in Limit Hold’em appeared to be running parallel with event 13 as 18 players took their seats Friday for the third day of the competition, all that remained of an initial field of 337.

Shawn Keller was the chip leader when play restarted, chased by Sorel Mizzi, Jeff Shulman, and Victor Ramdin, but they were all gone before midnight Friday, leaving just two players - Tyler Bonkowski and Brandon Demes - hotly contesting the heads up with similar chip counts when we went to press.

Event 15, the $1,500 buy-in Pot-Limit Hold’em recorded an initial entry field of 765 players - 115 up on last year’s registrations. By Day 2 only 88 survived with Ronald Lee holding the chip lead when the remaining contestants returned to their seats Friday.

Prominent among them was James Dempsey, Joe Sebok, Ali Eslami, John Dolan, John Racener, and Alessio Isaia, and with the money bubble looming at the 72nd elimination, the action was fast and furious.

By late Friday night the field was down to 16 at level 18, with Brian Rast holding a comfortable chip lead twice that of his nearest opponent.

Event 16, the $10,000 buy-in NL 2-7 Lowball Championship entered its second day, having shed 38 of its Day 1 registration field of 126 - 25 players more than entered in 2010. Vincent Musso started the day’s action as the chip leader, but there was plenty of quality opposition remaining in the field, including Shaun Deeb, Jennifer Harman, Nick Shulman, Jeffrey Lisandro, and last year’s champion of this event, David “Bakes” Baker.

Approaching midnight Friday and at level 16 there were 14 players still in contention, led by Steve Sung.

Event 17, the $1,500 buy-in H.O.R.S.E. was the only competition to launch Friday but it attracted 963 players, well over expectations and generating a prize pool of $1,300,050.

In this event players compete in five poker disciplines, Limit Hold’em, Omaha Eight or Better, Razz, Seven Card Stud, and Seven Card Stud Eight or better, and have to exhibit an ability to play all five games at a high level if they hope to advance to the final table.

Notable names seen taking their places included Todd Brunson, Ylon Schwartz, Jean-Robert Bellande, Scott Clements, Tom Dwan, Eric Baldwin, Eddie Blumenthal, John Racener, Chad Brown, Eli Elezra, Alexander Kostritsyn, Victor Ramdin, Lyle Berman and Andre Akkari.

Approaching midnight Friday, play was well into the tenth level scheduled for Day 1, with 196 players remaining, led by Eli Elezra.

With the conclusion of the World Cup in South Africa this weekend, the international media, organisers and politicians have been emphasising the advantages of a wonderful but very expensive sports spectacle, lauded by many as the best World Cup yet.

Despite two years of difficult global economic conditions, the organisers went ahead with ambitious stadia and transport infrastructure programs, creating jobs for some 115 000 South Africans during the four year build-up to the event.

Spain and Holland, which played off in the final Sunday with the former winning, are also set to reap the benefits of extensive betting and worldwide coverage, according to the experts. And bookmakers everywhere are thought to have done well out of more than one unexpectedly early departure by top national teams.

But the biggest winner from the one-month tournament was FIFA. According to widespread media reports, the international football body benefited by US$ 3.2 billion in television rights and marketing revenue, up 30 percent on 2006. And FIFA will not pay a cent in taxes or fees to the host country, thanks to legislative amendments made in South Africa especially for the championship.

It is estimated that South Africa spent at least R40 billion on extensive transport and communications infrastructural improvements and the construction of ten state-of-the-art stadia for the event. Intangible benefits like national reconciliation and confidence have been listed among the advantages, but in more pragmatic assessments, the tourism industry enjoyed a substantial boost and global publicity that could have beneficial impact for years to come.

Television coverage alone was extensive, showcasing the country, its achievements and its scenic beauty and advanced business infrastructure. Literally billions across the world watched the 64 games in the tournament and attendant news and publicity.

The Netherlands and Spain expect an acceleration of economic growth by between 0.25 percent and 0.5 percent as a result of their exciting ride to the final clash.

Television companies were reporting new viewership records even before the grand finale on Sunday, which featured sophisticated technology in a vibrant closing ceremony.

Audiences in the US - where soccer is not a leading sport - surged by 50 percent. In Germany, the semi-final against Spain alone was watched by an unprecedented 32 million people, and in Spain at least a third of the total population were glued to television sets.

The billions of viewers around the globe also saw for the first time a large advertising presence by very ambitious Asian corporations like Hyundai.

The half a million claimed players who use the well established Globet online casino and sports betting operation will have access to the wide range of games in the Chartwell Technology gambling software soon following a deal finalised this week.

Globets main markets are in Southern and Central Europe, and the company recently announced that it is to relocate from Gibraltar to the UK, where it will seek licensing in order to expand further.

For Calgary, Canada-based Chartwell the deal is a reunion rather than a new partnership. Chief operating officer Dan Phillips says that the two companies enjoyed a business relationship between 2003 and 2006, and are therefore familiar with each others business models and operating philosophies.

Globet md Enrico Salvatori says that the decision to return to Chartwell was based purely on the quality of its games and software.

Last month Chartwell added Australias Centrebet to its list of clients.

There’s a new twist in the shareholder legal actions against International Game Technology over the decline in IGT’s stock price since 2007.

The casino supplier is now being sued by two groups of employee retirement plan participants who say the plan made a poor investment decision when it invested in the company’s own stock.

Two lawsuits seeking class-action status to represent past and current IGT employees were filed against IGT on Friday in U.S. District Court for Nevada, charging the employees were harmed when the company’s retirement plan invested in IGT stock at a time when IGT stock allegedly was inflated by false statements about the company’s prospects.

Reno attorney Geoffrey White filed one of the suits on behalf of lead plaintiffs Randolph and Kimberly Jordan against the company, its profit-sharing plan committee and various IGT officials and directors.

The other suit was filed by Reno attorney Matthew Sharp on behalf of Christopher Carr, Roxanne Clayton and Brian Bennett.

Both suits allege violations of the federal Employee Retirement Income Security Act.

Sharp’s suit says IGT and its officials failed to “prudently and loyally manage the plan’s investment in company stock by, among other things: (i) continuing to offer company stock as a retirement saving option; (ii) continuing to acquire and hold shares of company stock in the plan when it was imprudent to do so; (iii) failing to provide complete and accurate information to participants regarding the company’s financial condition and the prudence of investing in company stock; and (iv) maintaining the plan’s pre-existing investment in company stock when it was no longer a prudent investment for the plan.”

“As a result of defendants’ fiduciary breaches, the plan has suffered substantial losses, resulting in the depletion of millions of dollars of the retirement savings and anticipated retirement income of the plan’s participants,” that suit says.

Sharp’s suit says the IGT Profit Sharing Plan, consisting of a profit-sharing component and a matching 401(k) component, offered IGT stock as one of the retirement saving options in the “participation contribution component.”

The Jordan suit says that as of Dec. 31, 2008, about $34.2 million, or 12.6 percent of the plan’s investments, were invested in IGT common stock; down from about 24.4 percent or $104.1 million one year earlier. IGT stock was among 27 investment options participants could choose from, the suit says.

Separately, IGT said it held a special meeting of shareholders on Sept. 30 and shareholders approved a proposal for a stock-option exchange program that would give eligible employees a one-time opportunity to exchange specified outstanding underwater stock options for fewer new stock options that will be granted with lower exercise prices.

Friday’s lawsuits are on top of at least five others filed in the same court since this summer by disgruntled stockholders over the decline in the company’s stock price. IGT has not yet filed court papers responding to the first suit, filed July 30, and its policy is not to comment on litigation.

The July 30 suit seeks class-action status on behalf of purchasers of IGT stock between Nov. 1, 2007, and Oct. 30, 2008. The lead plaintiff is the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 697 Pension Fund.

The defendants are accused of making false and misleading statements about the company’s financial prospects. The Electrical Workers claim to have been harmed as IGT stock moved from about $45 in November 2007 to about $49 in March 2008, tumbling to less than $8 in November 2008 as sales prospects dimmed due to the recession hitting the gaming industry.

The Reno-based slot machine maker’s stock now trades at about $20.

The first lawsuit claims investors were presented with a positive financial picture of IGT on Nov. 1, 2007, when the company issued a press release announcing strong results for its fourth fiscal quarter and year ended Sept. 30 including record annual revenue of $2.6 billion, up 4 percent; and gross profit up 8 percent from the prior year.

The complaint alleges the defendants misrepresented or failed to disclose IGT had diverted substantial funds to the development of the company’s server-based (SB) and AVP (Advanced Video Platform) gaming platforms, which the plaintiff says “materially compromised the company’s growth prospects and undermined defendants’ optimistic statements.”

The suit claims the slot machine and gaming technology company was unable to develop and market its SB and AVP gaming platforms within the time frame the defendants had represented to investors due to increasingly challenging market conditions and mounting costs.

IGT’s positive representations concerning the company’s shift to non-machine based operations were undermined by the slowdown in the gaming industry, “the impact of which defendants minimized,” the law firm charges.

The IBEW lawsuit also complains that during the time frame at issue, company insiders sold shares of their personal IGT stock for nearly $29 million — at the same time as the investing public was buying the stock on the company’s growth story.

The legal requirements regarding numbers supporting an attempt to put online poker on the state ballot in Massachusetts have been the downfall of an attempt by the Poker Players Alliance and other interested parties to take poker to the next level in the state.

Associated Press reports that Attorney General Martha Coakley ruled Wednesday that the initiative didn’t meet the legal requirements to secure a place on next year’s ballot.

Also barred were two mortgage modification proposals and a question requiring that a certain percentage of the state budget go to local aid.

Dozens of other questions - including a proposal to eliminate tolls and several questions to roll back the state income tax, were approved and must now garner the signatures of 66 593 Massachusetts voters before December 2nd.
